Just a quick update as to what we’ve been up to recently:
The Sunday volunteers have continued to attack the holly choking compartment to the South of the Sundial in which we’re thinning oaks in the New Year. The old favourite technique of cut and burn has been employed with vigor and the compartment is looking better already with the retreating holly.
We’re also ahead of schedule coppicing in Birch Wood on the Hawkwood estate and by Christmas should have completed the work allocated for this year and next. I’ve also been taking the pole saw along the bridleways to eliminate low branches that could hamper horse riders. Some work has been put in to weed the heather plots although this is ongoing.
Tree surgeons have been in to clear the last of the trees on the Oprington Road boundary to make the route clear for busses and HGVs now the bridge and road have re-opened. The bank has also been cleared of vegetation to allow the inevitable litter picking to be easier along that stretch of road.
Log deliveries are continuing to take place as the nights draw in, and we’ve completed the splitting of seasoned wood so have more than enough split seasoned logs under cover in preparation for the pre Christmas rush.
So all in all things are ticking over quite nicely. Touch wood.
