Last week we carried out a charcoal burning demo for local Petts Wood residents. We have been producing charcoal for around a year now, making best possible use of excess hardwood. Most burns we do we try to incorporate a demonstration of our work to share with the public, achieved with the help of our volunteers.
The process takes around 3 days as we complete a burn using our six foot ring main kiln, begun two days beforehand to show the end result. We also complete a burn on our small demonstration kiln on the day (shown in the pictures). This enables our visitors to see the whole process from loading the small kiln through to unloading the six foot kiln in an hour long demo.
We’re keen to continue practicing traditional woodland skills such as charcoal production here at Petts Wood. More demonstrations will be carried out through the summer, which will be advertised in this blog and on the Petts Wood main NT internet page. Our charcoal will be on sale in local National Trust shops.
