Unfortunately we’ve suffered a number of fires in Petts Wood over the last few weeks, most probably arson attacks. Although the woods are dry following a very dry winter, I don’t think we’re at the stage where a carelessly discarded cigarette could cause the number and type of fires we’ve seen.
In the Willett (eastern) part of Petts Wood we’ve had over ten fires in the past month. Some we can extinguish ourselves but on a number of occasions we’ve had to resort to 999 calls, with good resposes from the fire brigade. In all cases the only damage has been burned scrub and scorched trees – the worry is that as summer progresses we may see a more significant fire.
We’ve increased our patrols at targeted times of the day, to deter any arsonists and promptly discover any fires. If you should discover a fire in the woods or on the farm I would always
encourage your first action to be a 999 call. You can then always contact the ranger team on 01689 826393 to report the fire or any suspiciuous activity.
